Restart a Heart Day
All pupils in school worked towards learning how to 'Restart a Heart' today. Using the Heartstart program the children from P1 - P3 watched a story on a conscious casualty based on a mother falling off her bike. Her daughter was able to look for danger, check for response and then phone an ambulance for help.
The children from P4 - P6 watched a story on an unconscious casualty based on a day out. The girl demonstrated looking for danger, checking for response, checking for breathing, calling for help and then putting the casualty into recovery position while someone else phoned an Ambulance.
The P7 children watched a story explaining and demonstrating CPR. In this story a boys father went into Cardiac Arrest. The young boy had to again check for danger, check for response, check for breathing, call for his older brothers help and then administer CPR while his brother phoned the ambulance. This clip demonstrated the ambulance team using a defibrillator and thanking the young boy for his early intervention. Early intervention is the key to survival.
Hopefully all our children were able to go home today and discuss with a member of their family something they learned from these short clips. As we teach our children how to help those in need then hopefully they will be confident if help is ever needed.
Later in the year P7 children will be learning how to do CPR on the dummies and practicing how to put a casualty into recovery position. This is all part of the Heartstart Programme for which they receive their level 2 certificate, on completion.
