P6 Investigate Relationship Between Metres and Kilometers

25th Oct 2018

P6 enjoyed learning outdoors on Thursday, as they invesitgated the relationship between metres and kilometers. Miss Murphy set the class the task of predicting how many laps of the playground we would need to walk in order to reach 100 metres. We recorded our predictions in the classroom and decided the best instrument to use would be a trundle wheel. Off we went to the playground, to test our predictions. We found that we only had to walk 3/4 of the way around the perimeter of our huge playground to reach 100 metres. Next Miss Murphy challenged us with the question,

"How many laps of the playground would we have to walk to reach 1 kilometer?"

The children knew that 3/4 can be written as 0.75 and that 1 kilometer is equivalent to 1000 metres.

100 metres = 0.75 laps

so...

1000 metres = 7.5 laps (The answer is 10 times bigger)

We would have to walk 7 and a half laps.

Google Maps told us that this distance is equivalent to walking from our school, to just before Oakridge Villas.

A great learning experience for all.
