Outdoor Numeracy Learning

8th Oct 2020

Children worked in pairs to estimate and measure different objects in our school grounds. We learned how to share responsibilities and how to use measuring instruments accurately. We recorded our estimations, chose appropriate equipment for our investigation and headed outside into the fresh air for a fun active lesson.

We cannot wait to estimate longer lengths tomorrow. Can you guess how long 25 metres is in the chapel car park? Tomorrow we will estimate, measure and mark it with cones.

Update: On Friday, we estimated how far across the car park a length of 25 metres would be. In groups we worked together to make a decision on where we should place the cone to mark 25 metres.

We then checked our measurements using the trundle wheel, which is an excellent instrument for measuring longer distances. We discovered that our measurements were more accurate when we walked in a straight line. Our estimates were VERY CLOSE. It was interesting to find that everyone’s 25m mark was not the same. This taught us the lesson the estimation is only an approximate.

Learning for life is fun!
