Celebrating Maths Week in P3/4 (Article: 28 - The right to an education )

15th Oct 2020

Article: 28 - The right to an education

Primary 4 did some of their mental maths this week outside using the number grid. We looked at doubling numbers. A few weeks ago we looked at place value, understanding what value the numbers represent. Then P4 learnt a new and slightly difficult skill (to begin with) this week was regrouping, formerly known as carrying. Lots and lots more practise will be ongoing. With any mathematical skill lots of practical work is needed before we begin the written work. We need to visually see what is happening to the numbers so we can understand it better.

Primary 3 used numicon to add and subtract numbers. We love using numicon as it makes using mathematics a lot easier and we can see how the number is getting bigger or smaller. We looked closely at the story of 5 this week and we learnt the number facts of 5.

With our class restrictions due to Covid-19, getting outside, exercising and movement breaks are needed more so than ever to help. Having regular breaks helps to sustain our concentration and listening skills so that we focus and stay on task better. We are trying a range of OT sensory activities. E.g. chair push ups, desk stretches, star jumps, finger pulls, wall pushes and hand presses. We love these breaks. It helps us to think better. 🤔

Niall very kindly brought in a St. Gerard Majella candle as we learnt about St. Gerard Majella. Normally a 9 day novena takes place to celebrate his feast day on 16th October. We prayed, sang and learned about his life. He is the patron Saint of mothers and children.

Lots of prayers are needed at this time, more than ever before. We know that God loves us all and will protect us all.
