Be Aware Kids- safety on Farms campaign!
The 'Be Aware Kids' child safety on farms campaign is part of HSENI's commitment to eliminating fatal accidents and serious injuries on Northern Ireland's farms. Tragically, fatal accidents involving children on farms have been all too common on Northern Ireland farms over many years. To date, this campaign has seen a significant reduction in accidents involving children.
Our Primary One pupils took part in a Farm Safety session today with age appropriate materials and resources. We talked about how many children live on a farm or have visited a farm. They told their class what type of animals live on their farm. We looked at some pictures and they described what they saw in the picture (colour of tractor, what the boy is doing). We discussed the danger in each picture (what the child is doing that is dangerous or how the item in the picture could be dangerous) and together with the teacher the pupils identified what they could do to keep safe if they were in a similar situation as depicted in the photograph. We then watched a short video narrated by a child about "Dangerous Playgrounds."
We drew a picture of a mother animal and her baby and used the pupils’ drawings to discuss safety issues relating to animals and their young We finished by colouring in the "Play safe, stay safe’ colouring sheet.
